January 1 - The Commonwealth of Australia is created.

January 10 - The Lucas Gusher at Spindletop near Beaumont was tapped, beginning the Texas Oil Industry.

January 22 - Queen Victoria of England dies at age 81. She had reigned for 64 years.

September 6 - President William McKinley is shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY by anarchist Leon Czolgosz.

September 14 - President McKinley dies. Theodore Roosevelt is sworn in as President of the United States.

October 30 - The Dallas Public Library opened.

December 5 - Walter Elias Disney was born.
