Tipi is
a Sioux word which is applied to the tents of all the Plains tribes. "Ti" means
"dwelling" and "pi" means "used for". The Native American tribes, such as the
Caddo, who lived in North Central Texas during the first half of the nineteenth
century were agricultural and lived in permanent villages in large houses with
thatched conical roofs. However, hunters such as the Cherokees and Kiowas did
pass through this area, carrying their Tipis with them. As they often camped
near natural springs, the grounds at Dallas Heritage Village where Browder's Springs is
located, may have served as a camp site.
