About the Chautauqua Lecture Series

Like the Chautauqua Pavilion at Dallas Heritage Village, the Chautauqua Lecture Series was inspired by the adult education programs at Lake Chautauqua, New York. In the early 1900s, open-air pavilions were erected throughout the country to present their own “Chautauquas” where musicians, actors and lecturers brought a wide range of cultural attractions. The evening Chautauqua lectures are often held in the Chautauqua Pavilion.

In addition to the evening Chautauqua Lecture Series, Dallas Heritage Village also hosts the Pilot Grove Lunch Series and Village Readers Book Club. The Pilot Grove Lunch Series, held in the historic 1890 Pilot Grove Church, brings local scholars to the Village twice a year to discuss a specific historical aspect of Dallas. The Village Readers Book Club, held at the SMU Bookstore, selects five or six books for moderator-led discussions.
