Investigate if people really were "greener" in the nineteenth century and how life on the family farm was affected by the growth of industry.
Is your family cut out to be workers on an assembly line?
Could you have been a peddler in the nineteenth century? Find out as you trade items with our historic characters.
Compost, compost, what makes compost? Make a compost collage and take home instructions to make your own compost at home.
Does it belong in the town dump? Or is it a treasure in the making? Play our “Town Dump Matching Game.”
Visit the Learning Lounge to explore and compare life on the farm with working in a factory.
Don's miss the "Town Dump" exhibit and see what was considered waste and what was reused in the 1850s, 1880s, 1920s and 1950s.
Pre-visit Resources available September 1.

Registration
How do I register? To register, you have several options: • Mail—simply print out the registration form at www.DallasHeritageVillage.org and mail it in with your payment. • Online—Pay with a credit card online, but please fax or mail the registration form to us. Click here for the family registration form or click here for the group/co-op registration form. • Phone—Call Reservations at 214-413-3674 between 8:00 a.m. and Noon, Monday through Friday. • Fax—Fax the form with credit card information to 214-428-6351.
Which registration form do I use? If you’re part of a homeschool group or co-op and you plan to arrive together or in no more than 3 smaller groups, please fill out the Group Registration Form. If your group is planning to arrive separately, please fill out the Family Registration Form for each family. This will streamline the check-in process, so you can get started on your day as soon as possible. If your family is registering on your own, please fill out the Family Registration Form.
When is the deadline for registration? The deadline for registration is noon on Wednesday, October 7.
Do I have to pre-register? We strongly encourage pre-registering! It helps us as we plan and ensures that we have enough materials for everyone.
Is there some kind of schedule for the day? Almost everything is self-guided and self-paced and will be going on throughout the day. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will probably be a few things that do not happen for that entire time. But there will be plenty for you to do no matter when you arrive! A more specific schedule will be posted by October 1, and you will receive a program on the day of the event.
What do I do when I arrive at Dallas Heritage Village? When you arrive at Dallas Heritage Village, check in at the Ticket Office. You will receive a packet containing your tickets for the museum, maps, a program, and other related information. If you registered with the Group Registration Form, your packet will be under your group’s name. Family Registrations will be under your last name.
The Program
What are some of the topics that will be covered by the theme Green Fields, Black Smoke? We'll be exploring and investigating if people really were "greener" in the nineteenth century and how life on the family farm was affected by the growth of industry. During Lone Star History, you'll learn about what it was like to both work on an assembly line and on the farm. We'll look at what was viewed as reusable and what was waste to Dallas' nineteenth century residents. Children will learn about composting and the "town dump."
What are some of the ways these questions will be asked and answered during the event? Dallas Heritage Village has 38 buildings, many of which will have signs inside of them discussing the family farm and industry in 1888. In addition, our historic characters will be discussing their thoughts on farming, factory and recycling issues of 1888. We’re designing new History Hunts that focus on the theme just for this event. Hands-on activities will be scattered throughout the grounds.
