JUNE 11, 2009

During the torrential rainfall in Dallas on June 11, Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park flooded. Several structures have been temporarily closed to assess damage and make repairs.

Around 9 a.m. on June 11, the 1860s Farmstead barnyard began to fill with water. The Village’s six sheep, “Baab” and his flock, along with Lucy, the cow, were all moved to higher and safer ground. They are temporarily staying with Nip and Tuck, the Village’s Mammoth Jack donkeys.

At approximately 11 a.m., only two hours later, from the Farmstead to the 1900 Main Street, up to the front gate, the Village began flooding at an amazing speed. Gano Street (which runs between the Village and City Park Elementary) looked like a fast flowing river. Dallas Heritage Village staff quickly moved to get as many artifacts moved from the lower lying buildings, all on the 1900 Main Street. The Law Office filled with approximately three feet of water, while the Print Shop and Saloon only saw two to three inches. These same three structures have been victims from two previous floods, the last being in March of 2006.

At this time, the Law Office looks to have received the most damage. Staff moved as many artifacts as humanly possible up or out of the building, but many received extensive damage. There were no injuries to staff or animals.

For the foreseeable future, the Law Office, Print Shop and Saloon will remain closed. The remaining 35 historic structures that create Dallas Heritage Village are open for touring.
