The Main Street Saloon featuring...
Choctaw Jack!

In 1901, in a city of 43,000 people, 200 saloons & 5 breweries existed within Dallas.  Experience firsthand the atmosphere of a turn of the century watering hole, 'Choctaw Jack's.'

Charles Spiess, the son of a German immigrant, owns & operates this fairly respectable drinking establishment & gathering place for Dallas working men, members of the local German community, & sometimes slightly shady ladies. Spiess features a taxidermy Choctaw Jack, the last bear in the Dallas Zoo at City Park.

Celebrate Dallas in Song

Old City Park's Pilot Grove lecture, 'Dallas in Song' was a success!  Dr. Michael Hazel provided background to songs written for Dallas, including "Delightful Dallas", "Deep Ellum Blues", "Meet Me In Dallas" & the popular "Viaduct Glide".

Annette Smith & Tim Silcox provided piano & vocal accompaniment.  For more information on these songs & other songs from the time period, visit the J. Eric Jonsson Central Library's Fine Arts division.
