Step into the Past Each Month

Beginning in February, enjoy the all new Walk-About Tour.  During the Victorian era, this was a kind of walking tour popular among travelers when visiting cities or locations of historic or cultural interest.  Each month, there will be a new tour, reflecting that month�s particular historic theme.  We hope you�ll find something new each time you visit!

May - The Band Played On
 Before television and movies, music was the mass media.  How did music spread throughout the country in the nineteenth century?  Listen to some tunes and hear how music was brought into the homes of Texans.

Formed in 1989, the Dallas Banjo Band consists of more than thirty
4-String Banjoists and one Tuba. Their music encompasses every type, from Jazz, to Classical, to just plain Fun Tunes!

 How do once necessary skills evolve into folk art & hobbies? Skills that were once common have become unusual.  See what was once common in the museum, and then talk with some modern day practioners of the craft.

Old-Fashioned Fourth of July

Monday 10a.m.-4p.m.
Celebrate the birth of our nation as people did 100 years ago with picnics, bands, trumpeting tunes, has everyone sharing the family fun of the Fourth of July.  There will be hands-on activities for children, games, contests, prizes, lots of entertainment, and an all-join-in parade!

How has technology changed the lives of people during the nineteenth century?  Compare and contrast developments in technology throughout the museum.  The nineteenth century was the age of inventions, with new developments affecting everything from day to day life to business.

15 Pioneer Harvest
Girl Scout Day
Saturday  10-4p.m. - For Pioneers, the fall harvest was a time to prepare for the hard winter ahead. After the preparation, it was a time of celebration. Come visit with artisans such as the Potter, Farmer, Log Kitchen Cook, Native American and more and participate in hands-on demonstrations. Enjoy surrey rides, crafts, activities, and compete in the Pumpkin Carving and Pie Eating Contests. Come on, it's a celebration! Advanced Registration is required for scout troops.

November - Political Persuasions
How does politics affect daily life?  What were the big issues in 1861 and 1901?  From the violence of the Civil War, the fight for Women�s Suffrage to the temperance movement, the nineteenth century was a volatile time for American politics.  And the decisions made then still affect our lives today.

12 Civil War on the Homefront / Cub and Boy Scout Day Saturday  10-4p.m. - Fall in line with the soldiers of long ago.  Experience life at home during times of war by assisting with the preparations of a war-bound soldier, discover what were used as substitutes for many household items in a blockade, and hear the songs and stories of triumph and heartache.  Civil War on the Homefront is also Boy Scout Day.  Advanced registration is required for scout troops.



December - Holiday Traditions
How have holiday traditions changed over time?  How does your ethnic heritage affect your holiday traditions?  Enjoy the many holiday decorations throughout the museum as you learn about the history of many holiday traditions.

8-11 Candlelight Celebrate the season as Dallas residents did from 1840-1910, with crafts, music, dancing, children�s activities, and much more. Hundreds of hurricane lamps illuminate the pathways of Dallas� only historical village. Click here or call for times and ticket prices.
