Dallas historian Darwin Payne and the Dallas County Medical
Society Alliance recently received Chautauqua Awards for
Historic Preservation from Old City Park: The Historical
Village of Dallas.
The award "is presented
annually to a person or persons, an institution or
corporation, either for a lifetime achievement in preserving
history or for a single action in preserving the
architectural heritage of North Central Texas," said Gary
Smith, president of Old City Park.
Dr. Payne, a former Dallas
Times Herald reporter and Southern Methodist University
journalism department chairman, received the award for
lifetime achievement. He's written six books about
Dallas history and is working on a biography of Texas
Instruments co-founder and former Dallas Mayor J. Erik
Jonsson.
The Dallas County Medical
Society Alliance was honored for its work in preserving the
stately Aldredge House at 5500 Swiss Ave.,
which it uses for its headquarters.
"Old City Park
has a unique role in the preservation and interpretation of
Dallas history, and we are proud to also be in the position
to recognize and celebrate the important historical work of
the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance and Darwin
Payne," Mr. Smith said.
Lifetime trustee Ann Phy
chaired the selection committee.
Past Chautauqua Award
recipients and Old City Park lifetime trustees
Lindalyn Adams and Dr. Michael V. Hazel presented the awards
at a Curator's Circle party at the home of Mary McDermott
Cook, president of the Eugene H. McDermott Foundation.
Jeanne Aldredge, Joanne Fay
and current president Beverly Ozanne were on hand to accept
the award for the medical society alliance.
Dorothy Mason and Joanne
Bernbaum represented Tiffany & Co., which provided the
crystal awards.
The Curator's Circle is a
society of Old City Park's highest givers.
It's chaired by Diane Brierley and sponsored by Northern
Trust Bank of Texas. Martin J. Weiland, chairman, president
and chief executive of Northern Trust, and Old City Park
chairwoman Jolene Masur attended the ceremonies.
Old City Park,
at 1717 Gano St. just south of downtown Dallas, is an
accredited living history museum with 32 structures
depicting life in Dallas from 1840 to 1910.
It gets financial support from
the city of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs,
the Texas Commission on the Arts, individuals, corporations,
members and others.
