Miss Helen Euphemia Kennedy
Helen, her cousin James Nix and Tip
Helen Euphemia Kennedy, sixth of Thomas Kennedy and Sarah Whitehead
Kennedy's seven children, was born in 1831 in Gonzales, Texas. In 1847
she was sent to live with her Virginia relatives and attend school on the East
Coast. After finishing her education, she acquired a position teaching at
Mdm. Quimme's Academy for Young Ladies in Baltimore Maryland, where she was an
instructor in natural history, penmanship and knitting. Being unmarried, talk of secession and the
coming war caused her to leave the East and return to Texas early in 1861. She
acquired another teaching position in a small private Academy in Dallas, Texas
near the home of her brother William Kennedy and his wife Elizabeth. Helen
frequently visits the Kennedy farmstead to help Elizabeth with household tasks,
spinning, and weaving.
The song you are hearing is "Shenandoah "
