Miss Deborah Nix
Deborah Nix, the third child of Ambrose Nix and Jane Kennedy, was born in Green
County, Illinois in 1822, one year after her brother James. After her parents
deaths in 1827 and 1830 she and her elder sister, Suzanna, were sent to live with family members
in North Carolina. From 1838 until 1842 she attended Mrs. Bedford's Female Institute of Art and
Higher Learning in Staunton Virginia, studying elocution, painting, and fine sewing. After returning
to North Carolina, she continued her artistic endeavors and set up a small painting school for the
young ladies of the area. After the death of her brother James wife, Caroline, in 1850 he began to
attempt to convince Deborah to move to Texas where so many of the family lived already. With the
worsening political climate of the Southern States at the beginning of the War Deborah has begun to
give James suggestion serious thought, and has traveled to Texas for an extended visit.
