ShadeKeepers
Street Tree Care Courses to be held at Old City Park
September 5, 12, 19, and 26
ShadeKeepers is a special program of the Dallas Trees
and Parks Foundation for the planting and maintenance of trees, and conservation and
restoration of our natural environment, through education and public awareness. ShadeKeepers is the Foundation's response to
environmental challenges ranging from global warming and deforestation, to urban blight
and economic and social disintegration.
In the
fall of 1993, the Foundation developed a training program for dedicated
volunteers. Known as ShadeKeepers, the first
class of thirty volunteers was graduated in January, 1994. After participants complete the
course, they are equipped with the knowledge to assist the Foundation staff in tree
planting and pruning projects. To date there are over 150 graduates of the ShadeKeepers program. ShadeKeepers
has been recognized by the Texas Urban Forestry Council as the most outstanding forestry
program in 1995 and was awarded the National Arbor Day Foundations Award for best
educational program.
The
goal of the ShadeKeepers program is to create and
support motivated volunteers who are skilled in the art of tree planting and
pruning, environmental awareness, basic horticultural principles and after-planting
maintenance techniques.
For a
registration fee of $40, each participant receives training, the official ShadeKeepers manual,
monogrammed denim shirt, hand pruners and the opportunity to become a working steward of
the urban forest.
